Job Description

Ready to take your career global?

Make your mark at one of the biggest names in payments. We’re looking for a Development Manager Senior to join our ever-evolving Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) team and help shape the future of global commerce.

What you'll own

You’ll guide two engineering teams (mix of local and remote) to deliver high-quality, compliant services with a strong focus on rapid time-to-market and innovation. You’ll keep close enough to the code to review key designs and PRs, while spending most of your time on people, planning, and outcomes. You’re based in Bucharest and comfortable collaborating across time zones and traveling for key moments.

You will:

  • Grow people and teams

    • Hire, onboard, and develop engineers and tech leads; run effective 1:1s and clear growth paths.

    • Build an inclusive, psychologically safe culture where ideas are tested quickly and learning is shared.

  • Ship value, faster

    • Turn product and platform goals into simple, realistic plans; remove bottlenecks and handoffs.

    • Use data to shorten feedback loops and improve flow.

    • Champion experiments and proof-of-concepts; scale what works, drop what doesn’t.

  • Raise the engineering bar

    • Set and uphold practical standards: clean code, security by default, automated tests in-sprint, clear docs and runbooks.

    • Review systems and APIs for scalability, resilience, security, and cost; promote reusable, configuration-driven modules.

  • Align and communicate

    • Partner with Product, Architecture, Security, Compliance, SRE, and Program/Project Management to balance speed and safety.

    • Keep plans transparent; communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs in plain language.

  • Own the lifecycle

    • Design through operations: CI/CD, observability, on-call readiness, incident response, and post-incident learning.

    • Prioritize automation and self-service to reduce lead time and improve reliability.

  • Lead across locations

    • Manage local and remote engineers across time zones; coordinate virtual-first ways of working.

    • Travel when it matters (e.g., quarterly or for key milestones) for planning, onboarding, and offsites.

What you’ll bring

  • Team leadership in medium/large, multicultural environments; comfortable in virtual and matrixed setups.

  • A people-first approach: you mentor, coach, recognize great work, and address issues early.

  • A bias for action: strong judgment, prioritization, and follow-through to keep work moving.

  • Solid engineering depth: recent backend experience (Java/Spring or similar); you can read code and guide design.

  • Modern delivery practices: Agile, CI/CD, test automation, TDD/BDD, trunk-based development, feature flags, safe rollouts.

  • Platform know-how: AWS, containers/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), REST/microservices, and messaging/streaming (e.g., Kafka).

  • Data stores: a strong relational DB foundation plus NoSQL/caching when it fits.

  • Reliability mindset: SLOs, idempotency, metrics/logs/traces; clear runbooks and on-call hygiene.

  • DevOps habits: evolving pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions/Jenkins) for fast, safe deploys; watch performance and cost.

  • Clear communication in English; you simplify complexity and align diverse stakeholders.

  • Comfort leading across time zones and willingness to travel periodically.

It’s a bonus if you have

  • Payments/ fintech experience (auth, capture, refund, reconciliation) and familiarity with PCI-DSS

  • Event-driven architecture at scale, performance tuning, capacity planning

  • Infra as Code (Terraform/CDK) and shared libraries/services that speed delivery

  • Experience growing engineers into Senior/Staff/Tech Lead roles
